What is Jersey?

Jersey is a machine-made fabric and is widely used for the production of various types of clothing. Jersey fabric can be made of various raw materials such as polyester, wool, cotton, etc. Jersey fabric, however, isn’t a type of fabric but a collective name for a group of fabrics with a specific knit type. Jersey is extremely popular for making diverse types of clothing because they are opaque and somewhat stretchy. Jersey fabric is also very suitable for the production of bedding because it’s soft, absorbent as well as breathable.

The most common one is Standard Jersey. It’s made using one set of needles and appears smooth on one side and piled on the other. It’s also called single knit or plain knit. Then there is also the Double-knit jersey and also known as the interlock jersey, this is two pieces of Single Knit Jersey fabrics knit together to create a nice smooth and soft surface on both sides.

The name Jersey comes from the English island of Jersey off the coast near French Normandy, where Jersey fabrics also originated. In the past, Jersey fabrics were knitted from wool by hand, but nowadays mainly by machine from cotton and synthetic fabrics to make the Jersey fabrics even more durable.
